Technology
Berks County, Reading and Wyomissing, Pennsylvania
Dental technology allows dentists in general and cosmetic practices to be able to offer better services and more accuracy when performing routine exams or specific procedures. At Dr. Schwartz's Wyomissing, Pennsylvania Family and Cosmetic Dentistry practice, he uses the latest state-of-the-art technology in order to provide the best care possible to each and every one of his guests. Here are some of the different types of technology used in his practice.
Intraoral Camera
An intraoral camera is generally used along with a computer or television monitor. It is designed to be able to take a picture of the outside of a guest’s tooth. If Dr. Schwartz sees that you have a fracture in one of your teeth, for example, he can show you the actual damage to your tooth on the monitor. If you do not feel any pain, you may not think you have any serious problem with any of your teeth, but the truth is that cracked teeth may not experience any pain until it is too late to prevent tooth loss. Some situations where an intraoral camera may be of use include:
- To show areas of a tooth that are worn, chipped or cracked
- To show areas that need extra attention to reduce and remove plaque
- To show areas where the gums are showing signs of gingivitis
- To show areas where a cavity may be developing
Cavity Detection Dye
Whenever Dr. Schwartz has to cut into a tooth he always paints on a special dye that turns any area of decay (cavities) pink. This allows him to see if any more decay is present before restoring the tooth. Assuring that the decay is completely removed increases the longevity of his dental work.
TENS Unit
TENS stands for Transcutaneous Electrical Neural Stimulation. It describes a small, portable unit that operates with batteries and is used to send electrical impulses to stimulate nerves and block pain signals in different parts of the body.
The TENS unit used by Dr. Schwartz is a ULF (Ultra-Low Frequency) TENS. It relaxes the facial and masticatory muscles. This restores the muscles to their normal resting positions in order to gain an accurate occlusion diagnosis. It is commonly used in the treatment of muscle spasms and shortening of muscles in guests who are suffering from malocclusion and TMD. He also uses the TENS unit to help alleviate pain caused by tension and spasms.
K-7
The K-7 Evaluation system provides Dr. Schwartz with the technology to measure, display and store data relating to his TMD and malocclusion guests. In order to correctly diagnose and treat these painful conditions, accurate data must be collected and evaluated properly. The K-7 system is composed of three separate diagnostic tools for use in evaluating a guest for neuromuscular dental treatment: a computerized jaw tracking system, a system for monitoring muscle tension electronically, and an electrosonograph for measuring the sound of the jaw.
Digital X-rays
When taking digital x-rays, a small sensor that is connected to a computer by a thin wire is placed in different areas inside your mouth. An x-ray beam goes through your teeth, into the sensor and is recorded by the computer software.
This allows greater magnification, measurement and colorization to offer optimum accuracy when making dental diagnoses. Plus, your exposure to prolonged radiation during x-rays is reduced by up to 90 percent.
Diode Laser
This soft-tissue dental laser allows Dr. Schwartz to offer a broader range of services that are quicker and more comfortable for his guests. It is useful for dental procedures that involve:
- Incisions
- Excisions
- Hemostasis
- Ablation (removal)
- Vaporization
Diagnodent
The Diagnodent is an early cavity detection system that uses a computerized laser, which can see into the grooves, cracks, and dark spots on teeth to help us determine if cavities have developed.
