Berks County, Reading and Wyomissing, Pennsylvania

Temporomandibular Joint Disorder, or TMD, refers to a condition that involves the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) and the tendons, ligaments, muscles, and bones relating to it. In many cases, this condition causes a lot of pain and discomfort for people. It is however, very treatable. Dr. Schwartz of Wyomissing, Pennsylvania has a passion for working with people who suffer from TMD.

Dr. Schwartz Understands
Dr. Schwartz not only offers exceptional care to each and every one of his guest's, but he understands and can sympathize and relate to their problems because he has suffered with malocclusion (misalignment of the jaw) problems himself.

Causes and Symptoms of TMD
Not all causes of TMD are known, but some contributing factors that may trigger symptoms of this condition can include injuries to the jaw, dental procedures, grinding and clenching teeth, autoimmune diseases, low-level infections, and arthritis.

With so many possible causes it is not difficult to understand why it is often misdiagnosed or left untreated.  However, without treatment, TMD can affect your ability to perform normal tasks such as:

  • Speaking
  • Eating
  • Chewing
  • Swallowing
  • Breathing
  • Making facial expressions

TMD can also cause many symptoms and conditions that are misdiagnosed by medical professionals. Most often a person suffering from TMD will be correctly diagnosed and treated by a properly trained dentist. Some tell-tale symptoms and conditions of TMD include:

  • Migraine and other headaches
  • Tinnitus
  • Allergies
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Cardiac arrhythmias
  • Sleep disorders
  • Movement disorders
  • Irritable bowel syndrome

Neuromuscular Dentistry
If you have been diagnosed with TMD, or the possibility of TMD, Dr. Schwartz, a neuromuscular dentist can help. Only 5 ‰ of the dentists in this country are trained neuromuscular dentists, qualified to use state-of-the-art technology to determine the cause of your malocclusion and take steps to realign your bite and alleviate your TMD symptoms.

Determining where your optimal jaw position should be is the key. The movements of your jaw and its muscle function are measured to evaluate the treatment needed in order to balance your Temporomandibular Joint.

Pure Power Mouthguard
The Pure Power Mouthguard is a mouthpiece that is custom-fitted and designed to improve your performance with increased strength, balance, and flexibility to help you achieve the highest possible level of which you are capable.

While it seems unreal that a jaw joint can cause so much suffering, TMD can truly disrupt your life, your normal health functions, even your athletic performance. You could be making regular visits to several different doctors for just as many disorders. When, in fact, the correct problem is a single, all-encompassing condition that is very treatable.

If you think you may be suffering from the symptoms and effects of TMD, you do not have to continue to suffer needlessly. Please contact Dr. David A. Schwartz of Wyomissing, Pennsylvania today to find out how he can help you.
