Inlays/Onlays

Berks County, Reading and Wyomissing, Pennsylvania

Inlays and onlays are dental restorations designed to repair the rear teeth when a mild to moderate amount of decay is present. They are also used to restore teeth that have mild fractures or cracks in them, provided the damage is not severe enough to require a full crown. At Dr. Schwartz's Family and Cosmetic Dentistry practice, they offer the best materials to suit your needs.

Inlays and onlays are generally made from porcelain. Since they are made from tooth colored materials, they are often used to replace existing mercury fillings. Dr. Schwartz prides himself on the fact that he has not placed a filling containing mercury since 1990. He does, however, replace them with other, better suited fillings for his guests who want more natural looking tooth repairs. Modern inlays also offer a more structurally sound fit onto your natural teeth which prevents bacteria getting in between the repair and the tooth and causing more decay.

Inlays
Dental Inlays are used when the guest’s teeth have damage or decay in the indented surface of the tops of their teeth. Inlays are also the choice for replacing old and damaged mercury fillings. Inlays can be done in two appointments. The first appointment involves taking an impression of your tooth or teeth. A temporary inlay is placed over your tooth. The impression is then used to create a permanent inlay that precisely matches the specifications of your teeth.

During your return visit, the temporary inlay is removed and the permanent one is placed.

Onlays
Dental onlays are designed to treat decay that occurs on or outside the cusps of a guest’s tooth. Their placement is similar to that of the inlays. After an impression is made, a temporary onlay is placed. Then, the permanent onlay is created to match the dimensions of the tooth then placed and bonded with durable resin material.

Inlays and onlays are extremely difficult to detect once placed, due to their natural-looking design. Onlays also have the ability of helping to conserve the tooth's structure because the tooth's surface is hardly diminished at all during placement. They also prevent the need for further care at a later date.

Due to the durable, tooth-colored material used in creating inlays and onlays, Dr. Schwartz is able to offer you more natural looking and lasting results than metal fillings can provide.
