Dental Implants
Berks County, Reading and Wyomissing, Pennsylvania
At Dr. Schwartz's Wyomissing, Pennsylvania Family and Cosmetic Dentistry practice, he can work together with your oral surgeon to ensure that you get the best possible results from your dental implant. He does not perform the surgical phase of the implant process, but he places the crown, the visible portion of the restoration.
How do Dental Implants Work?
Dental implants are replacements for lost teeth. They are an alternative to dental bridges and dentures. They are metal posts that are implanted directly into the bone of the jaw where they play the same role as roots for natural teeth. In order to be completed, they must be topped with a dental crown, but once complete, they function as well or better than your natural teeth.
What Is the Dental Implant Process?
First, remnants of your lost tooth may have to be removed and healing allowed to take place. Then, an operation is performed to place the implant into the bone. The method by which this is performed varies from surgeon to surgeon and it may involve a CAT scan, a computerized surgical die, or a screw-type implant.
The screw type implant has become increasingly popular, but beware of dentists who are not oral surgeons who may offer to put in the dental implant themselves. If improperly installed, dental implants can fail, leading not only to the loss of the implant, but also to jawbone damage. If you are considering dental implants, make sure you work only with oral surgeons qualified to place the implant. Dr. Schwartz can refer you to several highly qualified oral surgeons in the area.
Once the implant is in place, a crown will be placed on it. In most cases, a temporary crown will be in place to fill the visible gap, but it will not be fully functional. Some oral surgeons say that fully functional crowns can be placed the same day as the implant, especially in areas where there is less stress placed on the tooth.
Why Work with Dr. Schwartz for Your Dental Implant?
Although oral surgeons are highly qualified in the surgical placement of the implant, they are not always equally qualified cosmetic dentists. You might find that to get the best results, it makes sense to work with Dr. Schwartz for the final crown for your dental implant.
