Dentures (Full and Partial)

Berks County, Reading and Wyomissing, Pennsylvania

Dentures were developed to replace missing teeth when all of the upper or lower teeth are gone (full dentures) or there are a few teeth missing in an area of the mouth (partial dentures). Original dentures were not very functional or comfortable for the wearer, but times have changed and they are now much more functional, comfortable, reliable and visually appealing. At Dr. Schwartz's Wyomissing, Pennsylvania dental practice, you will be fitted with custom designed dentures that will look much like real teeth and gums.

Denture Design
Dentures are essentially artificial teeth molded onto a custom fitted framework that looks like your natural gums. The teeth are made of acrylic that is prefabricated to match the size, shape and color that would be most natural looking for your individual needs. The base is also acrylic and is designed to precisely match the dimensions of your own gums.

Depending on whether it is a full or partial denture and what your preferences are, some may be fitted to rest on your own gums, or they may have clasps that attach them to surrounding teeth. Whatever the design, dentures differ from dental bridges and dental implants because they are removable and not fully fixed to your mouth. They are a cost-effective option for replacing missing teeth, but because they are not fixed, many people find them uncomfortable and inconvenient.

Full and Partial Dentures
Full dentures are used when all of the upper or lower teeth are missing. Reasons for missing teeth vary depending on individual circumstances. Some causes may include:

Partial dentures are used when you are missing a few teeth, and your surrounding teeth aren't strong enough to support a bridge, your jaw isn't strong enough for an implant, and/or you are seeking a cost-effective option.

Making Your Dentures
Depending on the dentist and the technology used, generally 3-5 visits are needed to design, prepare and fit a new set of dentures. Initially, Dr. Schwartz will take impressions of your gums from which your dentures will be designed. Once the dentures are made, they will be tested for proper design and fit.

Adjustment on Your Part
Like anything new and different, it will take some time for you to adjust to your new dentures. This is especially true if you have never had them before. Complete dentures feel different from your own teeth, but they should be comfortable and function well for you once you get used to them.

It will take a bit of time to adjust to speaking and eating. When talking, at first you may feel like you have several marbles in your mouth, but over time this will change and you will again speak normally, unless you keep removing your dentures. You may have difficulty with certain foods or you may have no problems at all with any foods.

In time, your new dentures will settle into your gums and should fit comfortably and securely. You will feel like a new person once you have adjusted to your new teeth and a big bright smile will be something you are proud to show the world.
